A good example of a “crackpot theory” is the so-called reactive mind of scientology. In truth it isn’t a theory it’s a belief. It is “crackpot” because it doesn’t explain anything that can’t otherwise be explained. It isn’t a necessary concept, in other words.

In science their aren’t any “crackpot” theories because in science a theory is an explanation that is based on evidence and it provides a service. The service a scientific theory provides is that it explains things that would otherwise go unexplained without it. Predictions can be made time and time again using the theory and so whether it is wrong or right it works. When the theory no longer provides that service it is abandoned having been disproved but that is a rare deal.
