Yes, wow. We weren't encouraged to go on the dole, I mean I was literally ordered to go on the dole by the most-senior staff member of the Day org. There was no pretense that we would earn anything from staff.

To assuage my guilt for lying every two weeks to the government that I was looking for work, I got a part-time evening cleaning job. It reduced my dole, but overall, gave me a little more money. No-one interfered with it, because a few of the Day staff also worked nights.

Most jobs that would pay a decent wage were day jobs. We obviously couldn't do them. About half the Foundation (night) staff worked reasonable jobs, and had money.

We Day staff were considered superior because we were sacrificing our opportunity to make a decent living. Foundation staff had their job as a fallback, and didn't strive as hard to make the org work.

That advice, coming from the "Most Ethical Group on Planet Earth" is shocking. Well, I'm not actually shocked, but I am horrified.
When I was in, I really thought Scientology was a lot better than it actually was. Coming out and finding out how unethical they were, how cruel they were, and all the illegal actions they took, was a huge wake-up event for me.
Your story of being encouraged to go on the dole to stay on staff is a new one for me. Just wow.

I didn't get to see what it looked like at other orgs. But what I could see at nearby missions and our org, was that staff were grievously underpaid and and had just a shatteringly hard life.
I know what you mean about the staff asking for so little. They were so wanting to help and not wanting to complain.
You definitely paint the picture that living in a tent homeless under a bridge and seeing the occasional stray dog and some random nature would have been a better existence. And that's just mind boggling.

Yes. In my Class-V org, it was expected that your money would come from elsewhere. I was Day staff, and our options were more limited. I was, point-blank, told by the ED that I had to go on the dole. It was illegal to get the dole and not look for work. Of course we weren’t looking for work.

The "Moonlighting" problems were REAL. Staff couldn't get anywhere near minimum wage for their staff servitude, and if they didn't have a "sugar Daddy/Momma" or wage-earning spouse, they couldn't afford to work for the org AND eat or have a decent roof over their heads at night or a bed to sleep on. SAD, as the staff didn't demand too much, just sufficient food and sleep. You would have thought it would have been better for Sea Org staff who at least had (cramped, dirty) dorms and plenty of Rice and Beans for the tummy, but Hubbard even managed to make that so substandard that moving out to stay with the homeless in their tens under the overpass seemed a better option. At least THERE, you could get fresh air to breathe, and a glimpse of nature occasionally, even if it was only stray dogs and rats.
