Yes, outsiders and never in’s immediately have that same opinion, this is clearly fiction dreamed up by Hubbard.

From the theortetical spiritual side of things, though, I think from a “believer’s” viewpoint, that it does “make sense” and it at least “hold together” as a “leg to stand on” as far as Scientology being a supernatural believing practice, namely the massive amount of exorcism steps of OT 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

The Xenu story explains the back story to the massive quantities of these surplus souls supposedly roaming earth, infesting human bodies on top of the soul that we each are.

We supposedly have these massive quantities of surplus souls co-habiting our bodies, thus the Xenu story just gives the slightly impossible explanation for why earth has these vast quantities of quarantined bodiless souls infesting all humans today, needing Scientology’s secret OT levels 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 exorcism to remove these souls off our human bodies and from the orbit around us.

And for sure, just because Hubbard dreamed up this explanation for why he felt he himself still had body-thetans, as he said he did have, at the end of his life, still orbiting around him and bugging him (told by Sarge the friend, staffer, ranch hand at the end of Hubbard’s life at Creston ranch), Hubbard like you said believed his own explanations and also believed in body-thetans being really real and affecting him.

But, I think it important to break down the secretive barrier of non discussion of the Xenu theory story, so the whole big Hubbard Scientology operation is fully minimally answered when answering the “What Is Scientology” question.

Scientology’s five exorcism OT 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 steps of getting rid of supposedly Xenu’s murdered, mass implanted and dumped body-thetans (souls without bodies which infest all humans like hitchhikers today) is a huge missing and important part to add to the simplest definition of Scientology.

Scientology is their pseudo-therapy and their exorcism practices. Xenu story just gives backing to why Scientologists do so much “secret” (no longer) exorcism.

If a non beiiever at least knows that these surplus souls are believed to be ‘real’ enough by Scientologists to do their exorcism to rid themselves of these body-thetans “surplus souls”, then that’s the part I feel to the public at least kind of “makes sense.”

Nicely said, Mr Beatty, but Xenu is a story, a tall tale, not a theory, no matter what Hubbard thought about it.
