The second-to-last email was far too "out gradient", imho. That said, wouldn't the majority of us have reacted in a similar way to Babs? Yes, it's funny when you're on the outside but personally it's a bitter reminder of how deep the conditioning goes. More sad than anything :(

TJ -- I couldn't agree more with your comments about the smear websites. They are so obvious they are an instant turn off. The example of Amy Scobee is a good one. If you are naive or a bubble dweller you could think this woman must be really evil for a church to hate her this much. But then you realise she was in the church and doing a great job for them for many years before they even noticed. What does that say about the church that it could be so easily duped? The sci-prop makes you wonder why they would they need or want to savage this woman so badly? Perhaps because she realised she'd had enough and told the truth about what the church was really up to. And you also find that the church has taken private information she has given them, spun it in the worst possible light and embellished and broadcast it. You also realise there are loads of similar examples.

Fortunately the internet keeps tabs of the other side. Scientology has clearly attracted many smart and lovable people. And they are often to first to say they were seeking something and got a bit or a lot out of it when they show up on the internet after they have left. So you listen to what Amy has to share and cannot help but conclude she is a positive and lovely person and be sympathetic to what her pathway has been. The internet allows us to contrast her with some mean spirited and hateful people (not all) who are in the church like DM, TC, TD, and the looney tunes who puke vitriol over demonstrators and those who question the church's agenda. I can see the difference between good and evil for myself.

I can't wait to see and hear 24/7 all-the-smear-you can stomach programming on the new sci broadcasting network. Should guarantee people tuning in will say what the hell is this? and turn it off after a couple of minutes when they realise this is the stomach-turning vitriol Miscavige pumps out from under the tax-free umbrella of a so-called religion. You just have to look at his body language to realise he is a very, very, very, very mean person, to paraphrase Tom Cruise.

I've had many conversations with friends still in and in each case I've found it perfectly acceptable to say I disagree with LRH about something but hackles rise at the slightest mention of the "Leader".

And even that word "Leader" being used to refer to him is a fairly modern thing. I don't believe it was used by anyone I came across prior to the fluff piece in the SPTimes around '98. Today it seems very frequent and politically correct on the inside.

In reply to <a href="https://www.mikerindersblog.org/cause-over-life-demonstration/#comment-137080">tony-b</a>.

Scientology "smear" websites are the thing that initially created a huge negative impression about Scientology for me.

When I was beginning to learn about Scientology, I was totally open to all information, eager to learn more, and completely unbiased. I decided to look around the internet and see what they had to say about themselves. One of the top search results was a website they had made about Amy Scobee, with the most unflattering photos and awful things said about her. It had the opposite effect on me than they intended, so instead of causing me to dislike or distrust Amy Scobee, I immediately felt a lot of sympathy for her and felt like I wanted to defend her, as the website was really awful, and I thought, no one should be subjected to this type of ridicule. It also was very amateurish and juvenile, as if a vindictive 12 year old had made it. It caused me to form a very negative opinion of the Church of Scientology.

Why Scientology would think this type of website, that they have a habit of making against former members would ever cause anything but negative feelings towards the church is a complete mystery to me. This is the one thing that caused me to say to myself: this is a malicious and ridiculous group that I would never have anything to do with. Who is responsible for such revolting "smear" websites anyway?
