Wouldn’t the IRS like to know the results of Stephanie’s research.? After all, Scientology has tax exempt status based on their providing a benefit to the community. But, if it’s all lies . . .

I’ll just add one more thing:

I also fiercely resent that what I donated didn’t do ANYTHING to help the people it was supposed to help.

It only “helped” the STAFF who needed a stat.

If the money had actually furthered the purported purpose, I wouldn’t resent having given it, or having struggled afterwards for having donated it.

But it did nothing. I could have given it to – OMG, so MANY organizations, and as modest a sum overall as it was (not to me but compared to what others gave) it nonetheless could have REALLY helped people! OR if not to organizations in the US I could have given it to people I still know in a very poor country who would have distributed it wisely and honestly, and that money would have REALLY helped some people in that country – changed their lives, in fact – given them a whole new chance to lift themselves and their children out of extreme (for real, extreme) poverty.

The money I gave I’ve earned back satisfactorily since leaving the cult. I’m fine today.

BUT!
That money did NOTHING except give stressed out staff members a STAT for Thursday at 2PM.

And THAT bothers me. And probably always will.

And although in my case I didn’t get into the cult until I was in my mid-30s, and although I didn’t ever join staff and was for the duration of my time in nothing other than a public, I resent like hell having been conned into attending events – Int Events and all kinds of events.

In my heart of hearts I LOATHED them. And there were so damned many of them of one sort or another.

I loathed sitting at events even in my duped state of believing that the IAS and the Library Campaign and WTH and all the rest were actually helping people!

For many years, my own personal and certainly private and uncommunicated thoughts about these constant events would go like this:

“Great! It helped. I donated! Very good! But do I have to sit here for THREE F**CKING HOURS? Can’t this information be CAPSULIZED into 1 hour? And MUST there be so many cartoon-like graphics, and booming music? We’re not six year olds! And must there be SO many testimonials – on and on and on with so many “Scientologists” (mostly actors, I know now – each one representing some ethnic group or other demographic of age or occupation) so damned many testimonials pretty much repeating the same thing, over and over and over…” You get the idea.

And sitting there on a Saturday nite!

I mean, it was just so BORING, even when I believed the data that was being spouted at these things!

My beef at the time was; “OK, we DO need to be informed, but can’t the information be summarized and streamlined to fit into an hour or at the most an hour and a half, and must these things be so freaking LOUD?”

Alright, as you can see I’m still ranting 🙂

But believe me, Linear13, I’m well aware of how MY beefs about lost time don’t BEGIN to compare to those of people out of the cult now, i.e, ex-Class V staff, ex-Sea Org members – OMG.

My long-winded point being, if I can be furious over time wasted at events as a PUBLIC, imagine how other exes are grappling with resentment over time wasted as staff and SO!

My beef, my grief and resentment about the time I lost listening to bullshit at Scientology EVENTS doesn’t BEGIN to compare to the time wasted and lost by others here. I am well aware of that and my heart goes out to those who believed, who honestly believed and totally dedicated themselves and pretty much their lives to the cult and its FRAUDULENT goals.

Cavalier, Hubbard did even less in the way of relief efforts, in spite of massive wealth and more members than Scientology has ever had since. DM’s Volunteer Ministers are something more of a concerted effort at PR, for what it’s worth.

Jere, I think you could say Scientology is based on lies. First Dianetics and then it are based on blatantly false claims, such as all the research cases Hubbard said he had but which have never been produced and which, given what we know now, obviously didn’t exist.

In Hubbard’s “Admissions” from the late 1940s, he even writes (to himself) things like “It is not necessary for you to lie,” which he apparently did so habitually that he recognized it as a problem. He was, as a judge once ruled, more or less a pathological liar.

The phrase “it’s in their DNA” is really applicable here.
