I just “learned” this concept from my cousin’s daughter who’s a physician in the emergency room of a top hospital. What she sees every day – OMG. I’d go out of my mind.

But she does her job, practicing her skills, calm, capable, handling whatever comes her way, caring but emotionally detached. She HAS to be! If she let her emotions take over she’d become a wreck in no time and have to quit. But she is very far from a wreck. She confronts and handles and can mostly help and those she can’t, well…she can’t that’s all. She does her job and then goes home to her husband and 3 daughters and enjoys her life.

And her patients are far better off for her emotional detachment . And btw I’m not saying she’s COLD. No! She’s warm and caring but keeps herself detached, apart, out of necessity, so that she can be effective.
