Thanks, Mike, for receiving my comment in the spirit in which it was offered and responding in kind.

To clarify to anyone who took it otherwise:
Obviously, I wasn’t talking about strict dictionary definitions. Words and usages evolve over time. For example, “imbecile” and “moron” used to be medical terms but have become merely pejoratives. You can still find the old definitions in the dictionary. Words used in technical contexts often have more specific meanings than outside them.

People who study racism have developed this usage of the word in that manner. It offers a solution to the problem of needing to distinguish garden-variety, individual-level bigotry from the systemic, institutionalized racism that developed on this planet and still has power in the U.S. That is not to say that bigotry of all sorts isn’t wrong or hurtful. However, if people throw the term “racism” around to refer to both, a pernicious reality is missed, where an epidemic of white police officers killing unarmed black children is equated with someone expressing rage in an impolite manner. Or white emotional fragility about facing this structural reality is framed as some kind of activism against real oppression. People can be offended by whatever they want, but it’s important to be able to analyze institutionalized oppression, and people who do so have advocated for reserving the word “racism” for the institutionalized form as evidenced by several centuries of history. This form does not, at this time and on this planet, go in 2 directions.

Peggy I have the same dream. I would love nothing better than to see DM stripped of all power and thrown to the prison wolves (altho more than likely he would be put in protective custody). And I’d be willing to bet it would be like a Warren Jeffs rerun…mental breakdown over said loss, but then rising from the ashes like a culty Phoenix and would run everything from there. I highly doubt we would get a fairy tail ending out of it. I think the only way to successfully get rid of DM for good would have to be some kind of internal coup.
