GATchild. I get what you are saying and I agree. I understand Goodwin’s law and one must be careful not to throw such things around lightly. That said, I think it is wise to keep the *potential* of any given sociopath in mind. No, DM, as awful as he is, isn’t ‘as awful’ as some of those other tyrants because his scope/universe is smaller. Given the chance, who is to say what he would do? From everything I’ve read about him he certainly has the *potential* to be every bit as awful. Hopefully that will never be realized. Early in Hitler’s political career, people laughed at him and never thought he’d be elected and that everyone could see what a flawed person he was and so did nothing to stop him until it was too late. These things have a way of snowballing.

I am sorry for any abuse you (and anyone else) endured in Lyin’tology. One of my parents was a sociopath and I’m always leery about the damage they can inflict. Small or large scale. And what is equally sad is that people can’t always see it. You can warn them, but they often can’t see it until it’s caused a great deal of harm.

While you have a valid point, I still hold with Mike M’s statement that the comparison is a straw man at best, allegory and drama at worst. In fact, this is the black and white tactic that the Church uses against people. It certainly doesn’t make any argument sound sane to compare DM to Stalin or Hitler. In most circles, it’s enough to get your opinion relegated to Godwin’s Law, and any valid points immediately become a moot point.

I’m not defending DM in any way. I was directly subject to his brand of cray-cray for eight years, and it took me another eight to shake it off. I consider him one of the more dangerous people to trust with people’s well-being and sanity. But he’s nowhere near the people listed above.

There are several different ways of looking at ‘how bad’ a sociopath/psychopath is. One can look at how high they score on Hare’s checklist.. what they are capable of doing given enough control &/or power. Another is by what they’ve actually been able to do because they happened to be (or created) a situation in which it affects many people.

There are top scoring psychopaths that create havoc and destroy (‘only’) a handful of lives, but to those lives who were destroyed, it is their everything. However, I cannot help but think of North Korea when thinking of Lyin’tology. From what I’ve read almost the entire country lives ‘in the hole’. Beginning with Kim Il-Sung and his ‘charismatic authority’ personality cult leadership, which has been succeeded and continued by his son & grandson, it is a lesson that such sociopaths don’t only exist in the form of a cult, but can exist as leaders of countries.

Obviously David Miscavage is high on Hare’s checklist (psychopathy scale), but ‘the worst’? There are, unfortunately a great many people who are sociopaths/psychopaths and how much damage they inflict often depends upon what resources they have and how many people they affect. DM has resources, money, power, and people to control but what if DM was not the leader of a cult, but a country? Say, maybe North Korea? The level of abuse by cyclic sociopathy in that country is horrendous. It could and does happen elsewhere. How to recognize such persons and stop them before they reach that level of power and control is key.
