Today I was at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy Conference. This organization has 100,000 members. It filled the Verizon Center in Washington DC, which has a capacity of 18,200.

Meanwhile the Church of Scientology, which claims to have millions of members, struggles to fill Ruth Eckerd Hall, capacity 2300.

Based on its demonstrated inability to get people to turn up for its major events, I would estimate the Church of Scientology in the US has about 1/6 the number of active members that AIPAC has, or about 15,000 to 20,000.

What I can’t believe no one is talking about is the fact that, simultaneous to the L. Ron Hubbard birthday celebration on the fifth floor of the Dolby Theater, three floors down in the main auditorium was a Paley Fest panel entitled “Stars Salute Crime Show Guru Dick Wolf” featuring Jason Beghe. Jason, of course, was on the panel as the star of Dick Wolf’s Chicago PD; however, as you know, he is also one of the highest-profile dissidents. The Dolby theater (and surrounding complex at Hollywood and Highland) was teaming with Scientologists that night, and I can’t imagine the concurrence of the two events was coincidence. The Paley event was open to the general public and I imagine Jason Beghe must have been terrified to think of the convening that was taking place but three floors up. What a brave soul.

Ann – Laughter! – A cute little cubby taking a catnap. That definitely fits the metaphor. Scn turned you into a lioness. At 70 years of age (never say years old) I don’t need or want a smart phone. I can read a map and prefer to make purchases from local merchants. I do admit to reading this blog on a tablet when my wife is hogging the computer. Love, Richard
