It’s clear they milk such minimal efforts for all they’re worth – especially for internal propaganda purposes.

And it’s interesting that you experience was that others actually at the disasters knew to avoid the scam. It seems like sometimes they manage to fool people, but perhaps less often than even that appears.

I am pleased of the accuracy of the LRH quotes as I still have the orginal OEC volumes.

You’re right PeaceMaker, There came to be no demand for scn’s “products”. At first, Tubby was able to generate a sort of demand as the “new kid on the block” with a self-help therapy which ‘cured’ “everything”, but as time went on, the inconsistencies built up until they were unavoidable. Thus, those who had ‘taken the hook’ shook the hook out and went elsewhere, usually happier than they’d been. IF Tubby could have and desired to deliver on his promises—if he’d HAD a product to deliver— there would have been demand. I’d still be in, contributing to scientology’s TRUE expansion, NOT that fakery Dwarfenführer touts; scientology would actually be a force for good, not a dreary self-made prison.

Or just that there’s no demand for the delivery of Scientology, anymore than there is for horse buggy whips, or old-fashioned snake oil and patent medicines like Carter’s Little Liver Pills – but something had to be done to keep GI stats up. There’s also the scam of paying for services in advance and having “money on account” that never actually gets used for services, which has been going on since Hubbard’s day, jump-started in part by the monthly price increases of the 1970s.

The Lisa McPherson case and several other ugly incidents around the same time, show that while there’s some remaining internal demand for auditing from diehard insiders, Miscavige had to confront what psychiatrists had half a century before – forms of abreaction therapy, like the one used used in naval hospitals that Hubbard experienced (right before it was abandoned) and copied, inevitably cause a certain number of people to get worse or go psychotic. Hubbard may have cynically written off the cost of breaking some people as the price of making the strong more able, and managed to cover up the bad outcomes in his day, but by the end of the 20th century people had connected all the cases of suicide an violence back to Scientology, and it was no longer possible to sweep them under the rug.

I think a major factor is that Scientology’s answer to problems like members going PTS Type 3 and committing suicide, or people showing up at orgs with weapons – which they still can’t entirely prevent – was to regiment and restrict the delivery of sometimes-dangerous auditing, and instead start to rely more heavily on other sources of income from the membership to keep GI up.

Sounds like a criminal element decided to bypass the COS. Too much work to actually deliver Scientology. Easier to say they did (i.e. fake IAS programs), but actually didn’t.
