I agree PeaceMaker, and maybe that’s what grabs the attention of no one who was ever in scientology. Many people, women and men, who have at one time found themselves is a situation that mirrors something that is going on in the cult. They can identify with it and the effect it has on a person’s life.

I believe it’s a reference to Alexis , the daughter he kidnapped. He tortured his wife by claiming he killed the child and dismembered her.

Peggy, you’re right that it’s much like an abusive relationship dynamic. Many of the same psychological factors and mechanisms are at work, and especially these days it seems to follow the stereotype that it is mostly women who are suffering, as staffers in Scientology.

And in spite of all that vaunted ‘tech’ the orgs are failing and shrinking. They’re smaller than many of the missions were 40 years ago; and the missions of course are mostly gone, with the remainder mostly sad shells barely hanging on.

You have to wonder why staff and members, though sadly that’s explainable through human weaknesses like the sunk costs bias or fallacy (“throwing good money after bad,” “doubling down on stupid,” etc.); the demise of a 1950s vintage “space opera” cult (Scientology is not the only one) itself is pretty predictable, like the faltering of Christian Science (which was shrinking by the 1950s, in the face of medical advances like antibiotics and vaccines undermining its faith healiing appeal).

Not to make fun of the ones who are too afraid to take a truthful look at what they are really being conned into believing and supporting but:

Pretty much sums it up.

“Divorcing” themselves from Scientology effectively makes their lives and ALL their decisions and ALL their goals and purposes “wrong”.

Its a simple decision to leave, but far from easy.

Many ex-Scns HAD the guts to face the truth about themselves and their lives, and leave the cult.

The ones still in, though – the true believers, the still Ins FOR REAL. not the UTRs, well, they just can’t handle the truth, that’s all.

Its too painful. They prefer to keep getting fleeced and exploited, while they point to their certificates and awards and tin trophies, kidding themselves that they’re changing the world, that they’re helping mankind, that they’re doing ANYTHING for ANYONE, least of all themselves. Its very sad. A terrible waste.

Someone, some wise person or philosopher, said that life can only be lived by the courageous, and that cowards spend their lives slowly (or not so slowly) killing themselves. That’s a huge paraphrase but that is the concept.
