That’s indeed the likely origin according to etymologies, with roots in the mid-1890s. I did a Google ngram search for use of the shortened “wog” over time, and for about the next two decades, it appears in a number of children’s stories, possibly as reference to polywog as well. It abruptly ceases being used after 1920, as it first became widely known for its perjorative connotation during World War I, and was then infamously revived around the time of World War II.

In the 1960s and 1970s there was a resurgence of interest in the Victorian era including reproductions of clothing, postcards and books, and people might have picked up on the use of golliwog or wog. Many younger people, and Americans, wouldn’t have realized the offensive connotations the word had taken on by, say, Hubbard’s era.

The proposed origin of the perjorative use of “wogs” on the docks, as a subterfuge to refer to “orientals” possibly including South Asian Indians, sounds very plausible. And it involves the same sort of tricks of language that Hubbard later pulled.

According to wiki, into the 1970’s “. . . the golliwog was seen, along with the teddy bear, as a suitable soft toy for a young boy.”

I was able to find him on Facebook and Google+ but as I don’t subscribe to social media can’t see much. Just to be clear his full name is Robert (Bob) Twaalfhoven. I knew him in San Jose, CA but it seems he and family live in Clearwater now.

A story I read on the internet which seemed to have some credibility is that British traders on the docks in China were calling the Chinese dock workers niggers which pissed off the dock workers when they learned of the definition. The British authorities told the seamen to instead call them wogs and let it be known that the word stood for worthy oriental gentleman which calmed things down. Who knows.

What I find so troubling is the fact that the middle aged people do NOT get it that when THEY become sick or “useless to COS”….they’ll be dumped by the wayside wondering WTF just happened.

So many older folks never made it “across that bridge”…they in their own brain washed mind think they’ll have many lives & many “meat bodies” & can use the money COS is “holding n their account” to be used in their “next lifetime”……..Wow, that’s plain nuts….Show me ONE PERSON who has a 2nd lifetime that USED the money “held in an account for them by COS”…..
