You become what you resist has never been so true with A Billion Years. Books make kabooms, opps… brooms, cooms, toons, huh? whatever… oh, hang on, that’s right BOOM!
Wondering: could an OSA staff member ever do something that would cause them to be thrown into “the Hole”? And if so, would that make them an OSAhole or just a regraded being?
I don’t know why I’m still surprised by the things I’m reading in your book. But the abuse is awful!
You are a strong person to have endured all that abuse. Why has no one in government done anything to stop this from happening to more people? I really hope they do not come after you more now.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
That is a quote from the Christian Bible, words spoken to a group of Jewish believers. It has been translated in various ways over the centuries, and often borrowed to describe the power of Truth in general to liberate those whose basic freedom has been imperiled. Mike Rinder’s book is not *the* truth, but it is the newest of a growing body of published work that describes living and working in the church of Scientology. Much of what Mike writes about has been seen and experienced by long-term Scientologists in some form or another. But the power of truth is that it breaks down the code of silence Hubbard devised to hide the knowledge of harmful practices of Scientology from spreading to the whole membership and shared as common knowledge.
Hubbard promoted the use of lying, the telling of “acceptable truths” or “shore stories” that would supposedly protect his income stream called Scientology from harm. He devised his scheme of punishing Ethics as a tool to clamp down on any spread of Truth. His “Keep Scientology Working (KSW)” became an insidious method of turning members, even husband and wife, against each other by writing snitch reports about anything and anyone. Along with the capricious treatment members received sailing on Hubbard’s little flotilla, the fear of the Master At Arms (MAA) eventually turned a free-spirited group of intelligent seekers-after-truth into a squabbling bunch of in-fighting schoolyard bullies.
Though the truth will set them free, it is not an easy road to travel. As RB describes, there is danger for any Scientologist who is caught reading Mike’s book. But that is just one of many barriers that prevent people from leaving Scientology. Hopefully, the members who finally see the truth, somewhere, somehow, will have the chance at an easier exit than Mike and others have described in their wonderful books.
scientology’s problem, tbh, is that it’s all based upon lies. If the lies are revealed, as they have been to many/most of us, everything implodes into an even WORSE chaos than the place already is. Dwarfenführer® & minions™ are barely keeping the Potemkin Village walls up in the light zephyrs they’re experiencing these days. It’d be worse for them if the general world actually knew they were there and CARED about what they claimed to be doing, so things like _”A Billion Years”_ actually got some traction. Most of us who are or will be reading it already know how morally bankrupt the (dis)organization is. scientology is NONE of the things Hubbard claimed, it is diametrically opposed to his stated goals. scientology(never capitalized), making the ABLE less able and poorer for 70+ years.
I only hope to be able to see the IRS or FBI padlock the doors
Great comment, Ammo. To it I’ll share a version of this biblical quote attributed to Kate Millett: “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off”.
Suicide cults have better promotion than those guys. Even Russia is doing better recruiting cannon fodder for Putin’s War — and that’s INCLUDING the eligible Russian “recruits” who are heading for the borders.

No matter what they do in the cult they get punished worse and worse. The new recruits will have a hard time of it.
