There are two the things needed to keep the believers believing - convincing them it's an "us against them" world and that there is urgency to the good fight - "the end of the world is nigh." This is pretty common in any fundamentalist organization. LRH was no exception. This is one of his ramblings from 1965. He published it in The Auditor. It was meant for all scientologists to read. He explains, with absolute certainty, that scientology will determine whether your "kid will ever see sixteen." Scientology certainly didn't change the world in the ensuing 16 years, and by 1981 … [Read more...]
Being “On Course” in Scientology
Our Saturday dose of Terra Cognita's thought-provoking views on scientology A Few Words about Being “On Course” in Scientology Most all Scientologists have a longstanding love/hate relationship with studying Scientology. In the beginning, members are excited to learn all about L. Ron Hubbard’s revolutionary mind/spirit technology. All too soon, they hate having to “put in the time.” Which in the world of Scientology is no small commitment. LRH famously wrote, “A cleared cannibal is a cleared cannibal.” Which means you can “clear” a man of all those past traumas adversely affecting him, but … [Read more...]
Scientology, Lying and the FBI
Recent articles at Tony Ortega's blog and the Tampa Bay Times recount the stillborn scientology FBI investigation based on FOI documents obtained by RadarOnline. There is not much else to say about the investigation itself, it has been covered at length by Tony Ortega, the Tampa Bay Times and Lawrence Wright, first in his New Yorker article then more extensively in Going Clear. What is interesting is to look back at how scientology responded when asked about the investigation in earlier years. A number of people who had been interviewed by the FBI (including me) had confirmed that an i … [Read more...]
Insanity in Scientology
Another provocative article from Terra Cognita Insanity in Scientology “SANITY IS THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE DIFFERENCES, SIMILARITIES AND IDENTITIES,” wrote L. Ron Hubbard in his policy letter of 26 Apr 1970, DataSeries 1R, The Anatomy of Thought. All subsequent italicized quotes are from this reference. “This is also intelligence. Two or more facts or things that are totally unlike are DIFFERENT. They are not the same fact or same object. Two or more facts or things that have something in common with one another are SIMILAR. Two or more facts or things that have all their characteristics in … [Read more...]
Scientology Massive International Expansion Lies
I noticed this comment on Tony Ortega's blog a couple of days ago and thought it worthy of being preserved in a more easily searchable place. Thank you Panopea Abrupta -- I quote your comment in full and then add some further thoughts below: There are 14 , no, 15 oops, actually 16 states so far with NO $cientology Mission or Org. Alabama Arkansas Delaware Iowa Kentucky (though they do have the Cinncinnati Org, just over the bridge) Maryland Mississippi Montana Nebraska North Dakota Oklahoma (though they do have Narconon.) Rhode Island South Carolina South … [Read more...]
PTS in Scientology: Bug or Baddie?
Another fascinating Saturday look at scientology from Terra Cognita. PTS in Scientology: Bug or Baddie? L. Ron Hubbard wrote that all sickness, accidents and injuries, pretty much all non-optimum conditions in life, were the result of a connection to a suppressive person. A person so associated was said to be a “potential trouble source,” or PTS. “A suppressive person, SP for short, is a really, really bad person. Like Hitler bad. The worst of the worst.” Terra Tech Dictionary, 28 Apr 17. PTS, “means potential trouble source which itself means a person connected to a suppressive person. … [Read more...]
Why Hide Scientology?
This email was forwarded to me. Southcoast Mission is one of the few "ideal" missions and is touted as one of the "best" scientology missions on earth. Why are they ashamed of even mentioning the word scientology in their email? Of course, everyone knows that the reputation of scientology is horrendous. They have told so many lies and had so many abuses exposed to the world that nobody wants to associate with them. But this is NOT what L. Ron Hubbard says. He proclaims people love REAL scientology -- the "Hubbard Brand" and flock to the real thing. Seems things have changed. He put … [Read more...]
Scientology: Champions of Hypocrisy
Over the past couple of weeks we have watched Miscavige go to war with Winter the dolphin. What has been amazing is the breathtaking hypocrisy they have put on display for all the world to witness. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), home to Winter of the Dolphin Tale movies, is a highly regarded, completely transparent non-profit organization that does wonderful work rescuing marine wildlife (like Winter), but also supports children and other programs. The CMA is the single biggest draw for tourists to Clearwater outside of "the beach." Miscavige, as is his style, threw a hissy fit … [Read more...]
The Fallacy of Exchange in Scientology
The latest in the series of Saturday morning conversation starters from Terra Cognita The Fallacy of Exchange in Scientology Ron Hubbard’s theory of exchange is not only a central component of Scientology financial policy but is a pervasive consideration in just about every aspect of a Scientologist’s life. Members are taught early-on that being “in-exchange,” is imperative. That what they give must be commensurate with what they receive. Giving more than one receives—“exchange in abundance”—is even better. Giving less than one receives—“out-exchange”—is an overt—a misdeed, a moral transgress … [Read more...]
The Illusion of Self-determinism in Scientology
Weekly Saturday feature from Terra Cognita The Illusion of Self-determinism in Scientology Self-determinism is a highly touted state of being in Scientology. Being self-determined is a goal of every Scientologist. “Other-determinedness”: not good. Deciding for oneself: good. “Self-determinism is that state of being wherein the individual can or cannot be controlled by his environment according to his own choice. In that state the individual has self-confidence in his control of the material universe and the organisms within it along every dynamic. He is confident about any and all abili … [Read more...]
